John D. Owens, Jr., of Pineview, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2021, in the Pruitt Healthcare Center, Fitzgerald, Georgia.He graduated from Abbeville High School in 1962, and attended ABAC and the University of Wyoming.He was a teacher and coach at Fitzgerald High School.He also coached baseball and basketball in Wilcox and Dodge Counties, and scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates.He dedicated his life to helping young people, and was a member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church. John was born September 26, 1944, in Fitzgerald, to the late Dr. John D. Owens and Martha McLeod Owens.Survivors include his two sons, Jay Owens of Fitzgerald, and Matt Owens (Jackie) of Darien CT; and his two grandchildren, Lillian and Duncan Owens. A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 13th, at 3:00 p.m. in Stubbs Cemetery in Abbeville, Georgia, with Rev. Chuck Taylor officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to the Abbeville United Methodist Church or to your favorite youth organization.
