Samuel J. “Sam” Rhodes, Jr., age 85 of 98 Ashe-Harrell Loop, Abbeville, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013 in the Medical Center of Central Georgia.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 15th in the Lebanon Baptist Church.Visitation will be one hour before the service in the church from 1-2 PM.Reverend Richard Rhodes, Reverend Jim Faircloth, and Reverend Chuck Taylor will officiate.Interment will be in the family plot in the Lebanon Cemetery with Military Honors. Mr. Rhodes was born on March 23, 1927 in Fitzgerald.He was son of the late Samuel Joseph Rhodes and Rachel Taylor Rhodes.He was a member of the Apostolic Tabernacle Church and was retired Civil Service employee from Robins Air Force Base as a Air Craft Mechanic.He was a World War II Navy Veteran and was in Operation Crossroads in Automic Bomb Testing.He served on three vessels, the USS Gantner, USS Begor and the USS Cloves.He received three medals, World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.He was a very active fisherman and loved nature.He was a very devoted father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers-William Taylor Rhodes, Jesse Morris Rhodes and Hubert Rhodes. Survivors include:wife-Carolyn Rhodes of Abbeville, son-Samuel Richard (Ramona) Rhodes of Abbeville, daughters-Vickie (Michael) Solis of Macon and Joyce (Bobby) Miller of Abbeville, sister-Mary (Harry) Walker of Abbeville, grandchildren-Jessica (Bo) Akridge of Abbeville and Richard T. (Rebecca) Rhodes of Abbeville and a great-grandchild-Alyssa Akridge of Abbeville. Flowers will be accepted or you may make donations to the Apostolic Tabernacle Church, 9394 Hwy 129, Abbeville, Ga. 31001. Frazier and Son Funeral Home in Rochelle is in charge of arrangements.
