Larry A. Gibbs

Larry A. Gibbs, age 82, of Abbeville, passed away peacefully while enjoying his passion of hunting on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.   He was a retired principal for the YDC in Americus, and was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish.  Larry was a member of the Wilcox County American Legion Post #71, the VFW in Hawkinsville, the Vietnam Veterans Association in Fitzgerald, and the Rochelle Masonic Lodge #190 receiving his 50-year membership award.  He was also a member of the Albany Shrine Temple, and was an Army Veteran, and a member of the Army National Guard and the Airforce Reserve.  Larry had earned his Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Valdosta State University and was the Superintendent of the Wilcox County School System for 16 years, and was a former chemistry, physics, and math teacher at Fullington Academy, and former principal of the Rochelle Elementary School.

Larry was born December 1, 1940, in Rochelle, Georgia, to the late Lam and Wynelle Stonecypher Gibbs.  He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lane and Max Gibbs.  Survivors include his wife, Faye Gibbs; his sons, Nathan Gibbs (Dawn), and Michael Gibbs; his daughters, Lisa Harden (Stevie), and Lynn Young (Craig); his ten grandchildren, Gracey Gibbs, Noah Gibbs, Ansley Harden, Abigail Harden, Anna Carol Harden, Jessi Young, Chase Young (Macy), Zach Gibbs (Summer), Cole Gibbs (Tracy), and Cal Young; and his two great-grandchildren, Cason and Ellie James.

A private graveside service will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery on Wednesday, April 12 ^th , with Rev. David Clark officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Legion Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 461, Abbeville, GA 31001.

The family will be at the residence of Stevie and Lisa Harden, 7941 Hwy. 215 South, Abbeville, GA 31001.
