Joicelyn Collins Rhodes, age 95, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2022, in Allen, Texas. She was born September 2, 1926, in Wilcox County, the last of six children born to the late James Louis and Sallie Dillard Collins. She attended school in Wilcox County where she graduated with honors. She married Sammie J. Rhodes, the love of her life, in 1942, and celebrated 65 years of marriage. She graduated from Norman Baptist College with an AA degree; from Valdosta State College with a BS degree; and earned her masters degree from Georgia Southern College.
Joicelyn began her teaching career in Abbeville, where she taught first grade. After twelve years there, she went to Rochelle and taught Title One students for two years. She taught one year in Kite, then in Tattnall County, where she retired in 1993 after teaching 34 years in the classroom.
Joicelyn was a member of Collins First Baptist Church and the Adult 2 Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her son, Warren Rhodes (Connie); three grandchildren, Michelle Gerber (Daniel), Steven Rhodes, and Stacy Rhodes; three great-grandchildren, Natasha, Abigayle, and Samantha Gerber
all of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, February 13th, at 3:00 p.m. in Lebanon Baptist Church, with Rev. David Lamm, and Rev. Steve Kimbrell officiating. Interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be given to Lebanon Baptist Church, 2271 Lebanon Rd., Abbeville GA 31001, or to Collins First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 218, Collins GA 30421, in memory of Joicelyn.
