John Wayne Gillis, age 82, of Pineview, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at his residence. He was a graduate of Abbeville High School and Middle Georgia College, and was a retired Civil Service employee with Robins Air Force Base. Wayne also was retired from the State Prison in Hawkinsville, and worked with the Georgia Forestry. He was also an agent with Liberty National Insurance, did substitute teaching and tutoring in Pulaski and Wilcox Co. Schools, and was a licensed Preacher who loved to witness to people. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Wayne was also a veteran with the U.S. Navy.
Wayne was born November 27, 1939, in Abbeville, to the late John D. Gillis and Pauline Sheffield Gillis. Survivors include his wife, Sue Dennard Gillis of Pineview; his daughters, Faith Woodruff (Wayne) of Sycamore and Necole Blackwell (Jerry) of Abbeville; a sister, Juanita Killebrew (Marlin) of Rochelle; a son-in-law, Michael Rountree of Sycamore; 4 grandchildren, Kayla Rountree (Kristin) of Tifton, Anna Rountree of Sycamore, and Cole and Cora Lynn Blackwell of Abbeville; and 2 great-grandchildren, Evan Rountree of Tifton, and Elliott Dandrom of Sycamore.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 1 st , at 11:00 a.m. in The Oaks Community Church with Rev. Blake Westbrook officiating. A private burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
