James Norman Simmons, 87, of Rochelle, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
James was born on January 22, 1937, to the late James Charlie Simmons and Norma Annie Louise Pate Simmons. He lived a life filled with creativity and devotion. A man of many talents, he was known for playing the piano with different gospel groups in the area, for his cooking skills, and for creating beautiful flower arrangements. James found great happiness working in his yard, tending to his cows and chickens, and spending time with family and friends. He served in the Army National Guard and retired from Robins Air Force Base.
James is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lela Fowler Simmons. He leaves behind two devoted daughters, Lisa Thompson (David) and Lynn Harden (Jeff), as well as four beloved grandchildren: Josh Thompson (Kristen), Jessica Mitchell (Chapman), Jeffrey Harden (Jason), and Justin Harden (Kristin). His legacy continues with seven great-grandchildren: Jackson Thompson, Aubrey Thompson, Charlotte Mitchell, Hinleigh Harden, Patrick Mitchell, Everleigh Harden, and Jocelyn Wilcox-Harden, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother, Bobby (Roxie) Simmons, and sisters, Betty Dominey and Rose (Al) Garner plus sisters-in-law Doris Simmons and Averill Simmons.
James’s deep love for his family and community will be remembered and treasured by all who knew him. He was truly one of a kind.
Pallbearers are Josh Thompson, Jackson Thompson, Chapman Mitchell, Jeffrey Harden, Justin Harden, Jason Wilcox, and Jeff Simmons. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the adult Sunday school classes at Pope City.
The family would like to thank Pruitt Health Hospice for his care at home. Special thanks to Kenneth Kellogg for his dedication and service.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Pope City Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 11:00 am with a private family interment.
