Jack C. Hammond, age 88 of Abbeville, passed away Friday, January 13, 2012 at his residence.Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 15th in the Abbeville First Baptist Church. Revernd Tony Dixon, Revenerd Chuck Taylor, Reverend Jim Faircoth and Reverend Tommy Baker will officiate. Mr. Hammond was born October 27,1923 in South Bend, Indiana having lived the greater part of his life in Abbeville.He was son of the late Frank Hammond and Joann Zimmer Hammond.He was owner - operator of Hammond’s Fine Furniture and Appliances since 1945.He was a member and former treasurer at the Abbeville First Baptist Church.He was a member of the Pulaski County Farm Bureau.He was awarded a Football Scholarship to the University of Michigan but choose to serve his country in the Army as Private First Class from 1943-1946. While serving in WWII he earned a Purple Heart from wounds he recieved in Abbeville, France. He also received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge 1st Award, WWII Victoy Medak and the Honorable Service Lapel Button. While serving in the European Theatre in WWII he was a member of theelite Supreme Headquarters Allied Expedotionary Force (SHAEF). Survivors include: wife-Carolyn Hammond of Abbeville, son-Dr. William J. Hammond (Jan) of Fitzgerald, daughter-Kathy Dozier (William) of Abbeville, brother-Bill Hammond of Peoria, Illinois, grandchildren - Dr. Kaine Brown (Kelly), Heather Hammond NeSmith , (Alan), Kacey Brown (Jenni), Will Hammond (Laura), Taylor Hammond, Chandler Hammond and 6-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson Kent Dozier in 2006.
