In his early years, Curt worked for his father’s construction company and helped build numerous houses, the Ozella Road to the Gulf of Mexico and install the underwater observatory at the Homosassa Springs State Park. Curt took great pride in being a true “Florida Cracker.” Each spring when school ended, he would ride on horseback into the swamp lands where the Nichols cattle had been sent to graze over the winter to gather the cattle to take them to their summer grazing in the family’s watermelon fields and on to market. After graduating from Crystal River High School in 1966, Curt moved to Newport, Rhode Island where he worked at the Naval Base as one of the first to use computerized processing in the workplace.
Curt ultimately made his way back to Florida where he opened a practice assisting clients with bookkeeping and tax preparation. This practice would lead him to the Arthur Andersen accounting firm where he was instrumental in developing software to electronically process and file tax returns, including spending six weeks working with the IRS in developing its electronic filing protocols.
While traveling for Arthur Andersen, Curt met his wife, Cheri Lee Nichols. Curt and Cheri moved to Georgia and Wilcox County in 1999, where their children Justin Duane Nichols and Jessie Kathleen Nichols were raised. Curt is survived by Cheri, Justin and Jessie.
