Herbert Ferrell DeBarry, age 86, of Rochelle, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of July 11, 2022. Mr. DeBarry was a resident of Northside Villa in Rochelle, Georgia. A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Mr. DeBarry was born on September 11, 1935, in the Patmos Community, in Baker County Georgia. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Duncan DeBarry. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Ralph, and Frank DeBarry, and his two sisters, Elizabeth D. Morgan and Jane D. Jursik. Mr. DeBarry is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. DeBarry is predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, LaVerne Daniels DeBarry. He is survived by his step-daughter, Delaine Graham (Tommy) McDonald, and his step-son, James Hensley (Gail) Graham. He was known as Papa De to his four step-grandchildren; Lee McDonald of Rochelle, Lance (Cindy) McDonald of Rome, Renee Graham (Tom) Ingram of Dawson, and Heather Graham (Chris) Hood of Mableton. Papa De is survived by eight step-great-grandchildren; Conner McDonald, Lucas McDonald, Judge McDonald, Max McDonald, Hensley Ingram, Analyn Ingram, Graham Hood, and Marshall Hood.
For 50 years Herbert was a faithful member of First Avenue Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons, and for many years was the Music Director. One of Mr. DeBarry’s greatest loves in life was music. He had a beautiful voice and greatly enjoyed singing. For a while he held the position of Music Director for the Little River Baptist Association. Also, he served as an Administrator for the Little River Association’s Continuing Education Program. Mr. DeBarry was a former member of the Wilcox County Arts Council and was a past member of the Rochelle Lion’s Club.
Mr. DeBarry was retired from Robins Air Force Base after 34 years of civilian employment. He also served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1958-1962.
Mr.DeBarry was quite knowledgeable on numerous subjects and had a remarkable memory. He could remember his life experiences from the very time, date, and year – never forgetting a detail. He was always eager to recall these happenings to all who listened. He had a story, a quote, and a strong opinion for every situation that might arise and he willing shared them.
The family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to Northside Villa and Reflections Hospice for the expert and compassionate care given to Mr. DeBarry by these healthcare professionals. The family is every thankful to Ms. Patricia Singleton, who has been Mr. DeBarry’s personal caregiver for more than four years. Ms. Sheneka Grace was a private caregiver to Mr. DeBarry during his final days. These ladies will long be remembered for their hours of devotion and loyal assistance they each provided to Mr. DeBarry.
