Gussie T. Hawkins

Gussie T. Hawkins, age 92 of Rochelle, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2025 in the Northside Villa assisted Living Center.  Mrs. Hawkins was born January 11, 1933 to the late John Henry and Opal White Tomberlin.  She was raised by her grandmother, the late Jane Land Tomberlin.  She was married to the late James W. Hawkins for 61 years and he was the love of her life.  Mrs. Hawkins was the epitome  of a true Southern, Christian Lady whose pride and joy was her family.  She was a homemaker for many years and was an amazing cook, caretaker, gardener and friend.  She was locally famous for her cooking skills, most notably “Gussie burgers” and tea cakes.

Survivors include her sons, Danny (Wanda) Hawkins and Billy (Patsy) Hawkins, Mark (Renee) Hawkins, and daughter Cathy ( Wayne) Sangster, her grandchildren Niesi (Jamie) Ashe, Kim (Clay) Wilson, Chad (Rebekah) Hawkins, Amanda (B. J.) McDonald, Shelby (Bryce) Blaschka, Whitney (Jacob Loper) Sangster, and Steven (Leslie) Hawkins.  She had 13-great grandchildren Avery, Ellee and Willow Hawkins; Camden, Weston and Emersyn Ashe; Marley and Myles Wilson; Adalyn Loper; Addison and Macie James McDonald; Andi and Wyatt Hawkins.  Sisters, Betty Bex, Helon Love, Mary Emma Tomberlin, brother, Bruce (Nita) Tomberlin, and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was predeceased by her parents, a daughter, Nancy Hawkins, a son, Tommy Hawkins, Brothers, Robert Tomberlin, Bill Tomberlin, and John W. Tomberlin, and a sister, Mayme Jane Duvall.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM Tuesday, January 14th at Frazier and Son Funeral Home in Rochelle, Georgia.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 15th at First Baptist Church in Rochelle.  Interment will be at Morningside Cemetery immediately following the service.  Reverend Larry Wilbanks will officiate.

The family has requested that donations be made to Friends of Morningside Cemetery, P. O. Box 156, Rochelle, Ga. 31079 .  The family also wishes to thank Crisp Regional Hospice and Northside Villa Assisted Living Center for their compassion and care.  The family will gather at the home of Billy and Patsy Hawkins in Rochelle.
