Elaine Ramsbottom Peebles

Elaine Ramsbottom Peebles, 93, of Greenville, SC, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2017. A private family graveside service will be held at the family cemetery in Pitts, Georgia. Born June 11, 1923 in Fall River Massachusetts, Mrs. Peebles was the eldest child of the late John Dana Ramsbottom and the late Barbara Rooney Ramsbottom. Mrs. Peebles graduated from Fall River High School and attended Smith College in Northampton MA. Mrs. Peebles met her husband, Lyston C. Peebles, Jr., of Pitts GA during World War II. They married on December 18, 1943 in the home of her parents. The couple raised their 4 children in Greenville SC. Mrs. Peebles was a member of First Baptist Church, a former member of the Junior League, a former volunteer at Shriner’s Hospital, and helped pioneer women’s involvement in the Republican party in Greenville. She enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, Folly Beach, and cheering for her beloved Boston Red Sox. Mrs. Peebles was a devoted daughter, wife, and mother, living courageously all her life for her family and her community. Mrs. Peebles was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Lyston C. Peebles, Jr.; brothers J. Dana Ramsbottom of Gainesville GA, Robert M. Ramsbottom of Fitchburg MA, sister Joan R. Andrews of New Haven CT, and daughter-in-law Debra Murphy Peebles of Sandy Springs SC. She is survived by brothers Donald H. Ramsbottom (Rohlat) of Portsmouth RI, William D. Ramsbottom (Bonnie) of Amelia Island FL; sister-in-law Isabel W. Ramsbottom of Gainesville GA; daughter Barbara P. Smith of Summerville SC; sons Lyston C. Peebles III of Raleigh NC, J. Bradford Peebles of Sandy Springs SC, and William M. Peebles (Elizabeth) of Columbia SC; grandchildren Russell Smith, Michael Smith (Elizabeth), John Peebles (Kelly), Joyce Granger (Christopher), and Laney Peebles. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Danielle Smith, Sarah Smith, Tucker Smith, Connor Smith, Lucy Peebles, Brady Peebles, Liam Granger and Ellie Granger, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank Tammy Wallace for her care over the years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ School, 500 Christ School Rd, Arden NC 28704.
