Edna Whelchel Cannon

Edna Whelchel Cannon, age 90 of 1861 Sibbie Rd., Abbeville, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013 at her residence.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 1st in the Abbeville United Methodist Church.Visitation will be one hour before the service from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM in the church.Reverend Tony Dixon and Reverend Jim Faircloth will officiate.Interment will be in the family plot in the Stubbs Cemetery. Mrs. Cannon was born on February 21, 1923 in Cordele.She was daughter of the late Ben T. Whelchel and Susie Dodson Whelchel.She graduated from Rochelle High School.She also graduated from the Georgia State College for Women at Milledgeville where she received a degree in Home Economics.She was married to Earl M. Cannon, Jr. who passed away in 2008.They were married for 54 years.She was a member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church where she had served in all offices of the United Methodist Women.She was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.She was a member of the Edna Cannon Circle which was named in her honor for years of dedicated service and the Dogwood Garden Club.She was a retired Home Economics Teacher from the Wilcox County School System.She had also been a Home Economist in Roberta and Hawkinsville. Survivors include:her daughter-Carolyn C. Wilson and son-in-law-Aubrey L. Wilson of Abbeville, grandson-Cannon Wilson and grand-daughter-in-law-Joanna Wilson of Carrollton, daughter-Kay Faircloth of Fitzgerald, grand-daughter-Jennifer Farmer and Grand-son-in-law-Matt Farmer of Atlanta,daughter-Susan C. Cravey and son-in-law-Joseph Cravey of Abbeville, sister-Dot Barineau and brother-in-law-Gene Barineau of Lawrenceville, sister-in-law-Louise Whelchel of Rochelle. Mrs. Cannon’s private nursing staff was Barbara Atherton, Melissa McKinney, Helen Cook and Hazel Brown. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Abbeville United Methodist Church, 223 Broad St. South, Abbeville, Ga. 31001 or the Abbeville First Baptist Church, 120 Church St. South, Abbeville, Ga. 31001. Frazier and Son Funeral Home in Rochelle is in charge of arrangements.
