Bryan Sangster conducting the committal service.

Earl was born October 22, 1933, in Crisp County, to the late Jessie Raper Wells and James Franklin Wells.  He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Emerald Eugene Wells, Edward Franklin Wells, Virginia Wells Pierce, Pansy Wells Smith, James Clyde Wells, Jesse Ronald Wells, and James Donald Wells.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Polly Burnam Wells; daughters, Beverly Wells Bloodworth (Dennis) of Chula, Angela Wells Felker of Ft. Myers FL, and Sheila Wells Benoit (Michael) of Forsyth; sisters, Annette Rowland of Ft. Valley and Helen Kear of Sevierville TN; sisters-in-law, Betty Lowery, Delores Wells and Beth Wells, and a brother-in-law, Mac Burnam.

Earl is also survived by his six beloved grandchildren: Tiffanie Flemming of Atlanta, Danielle Balanis of Birmingham AL, Brian Bloodworth of Chula, April Hogan of Gainesville, Lee Felker of Atlanta, and Kelly Kobus of Kennesaw.  He also has eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

After graduating from high school in Pineview, Earl joined the United States Air Force where he was a classified communications technician.  He then was employed by the National Security Agency as a communications specialist.  He retired from the 5 th Mobile Communications Group at Robins AFB and then worked several years for the Space Surveillance Station outside Hawkinsville.

Earl was a member of Friendship Baptist Church for many years where he was a deacon, taught men’s Sunday school, and held various church offices.  He loved his church family and his community.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post 71 in Wilcox County.

Earl and Polly raised their daughters in an old house he remodeled on his farm in Tippettville.  He enjoyed planting a garden every spring and, according to his daughters, seemed to make the butter-beans rows longer each year.  His favorite hobby was tinkering with the mechanical equipment in his backyard shop.  He loved to take scrap parts from old machinery and rework them into something totally different.  Over the years he built a bulldozer, a crawler-excavator and an air boat among many other things.  He usually had something in the works.  He always listened to talk radio or country music while he worked.

Earl enjoyed talking politics and was a big fan of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News.  He recently said he had aspirations to “see my 90 th birthday and possibly even vote in the 2024 election before this old heart completely gives out.”

The family would like to thank the many friends and family who visited and prayed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Friendship Baptist Church or the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home.
