Dorothy Joanne Whittle Mcwhorter

Dorothy Joanne Whittle McWhorter passed away on September 19, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.She was born on January 26, 1931 in Rochelle, Ga. in the early years of the Great Depression to the late William Hardy and Sarah Delilah Whittle. She was married to Harold E. McWhorter for 62 years until his passing on November 6, 2012.She is survived by their 2 loving children and their spouses Glyn McWhorter (Robbie McWhorter) of Milton, Ga. and Donna M. Gulley (David Gulley) of Waco, TX, 4-grandchildren, Justin and Gretchen McWhorter, Aimee McWhorter and Nathaniel and Carolyn McWhorter and Katie G. Coffey, 10 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved sisters, Rena W. Belisle and Juanita W. Henderson, her brother Howard Whittle and all their spouses. Joanne graduated as Salutatorian of her senior class at Rochelle High School.She worked briefly for the FSA of Wilcox County and then she and Harold Married in 1950.They moved to Atlanta and thru his military service and work career, they live in Utah, California, Minnesota, then back to Albany and Macon, Ga.Eventually returning to the Atlanta area, they settled in Roswell where they remained for over 45 years.They were members of FBC Roswell and were blessed by their large SS class there.Of her various interests, Joanne was an avid gardener, an excellent seamstress and meticulous homemaker.After surviving cancer in her mid-forties, she became an antiques’ collector.She and Harold enjoyed participating in numerous antique shows, both selling, and collecting over the years.Growing up on a farm in South Ga. her father taught her how to plow with a mule and she helped with many chores including picking cotton, but she never learned to swim. So after the age of 40, she joined the Northside Atlanta YMCA and learned to swim.She loved and encouraged her children and grandchildren and as she would often say, “I did the best I knew how”.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 12:00 PM at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors in Roswell, Ga.the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.A service will also be held on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Christian Home Baptist Church in Rochelle, Ga. Reverend David Clark will officiate.Interment will be in the family plot in the church cemetery. Frazier and Son Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
