Charlotte Lois Britt Ham, 86, died Nov. 22, 2024 at home in Bloomington, Indiana with her family by her side. Charlotte was born on January 4, 1938 to Collis and Lois Britt. She was one of eight children and a fraternal twin to her brother Charles. She was a graduate of Pitts High School in Pitts, Ga in 1953 and was Class Poet of her graduating class. She married Robert Ham in May of 1956 and they had three children together. Most of their married life was lived in Dawson, Georgia and they were married for 56 years until Robert’s death. She lived most of her life in South Georgia where she was a homemaker and raised her children. She owned and operated a daycare for children for many years and later operated a small grocery store in Dawson with her husband until retiring. Charlotte was a voracious reader of fiction and history and instilled a love of reading in her children through regular and frequent visits to the public library when they were very young. In her later years, she loved being read to by her son-in-law.
She was a member of the Intercontinental Church of God. In 2010, she and Robert moved to Big Sandy, Texas to be closer to their daughter Connie’s family, particularly her great grandchildren. Spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren was one of her greatest joys. In July of 2021, she moved to Bloomington, Indiana to live with her daughter Robin and son-in-law Klaus. She quickly made friends and loved watching the snow fall, but, staying true to her southern roots, never developed a fondness for the winter cold. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, beloved son Bobby, and sisters Vaudine McDaniel, Sandra Ann Caine, and Janice Coker. She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses: Connie and Larry Ellison and Robin and Klaus Rothe; grandchildren and spouses Jessica Ellison and James Coan and Matthew and Kirbie Ellison; great grandchildren Nathan, Isla, and August Ellison; sister-in-law Janie McDuffie; sisters Carolyn Benson and Barbara Hilliard and brothers Charles and Lamar Britt and many nieces and nephews.
