Charles Lee Harper, 84, of Hoschton GA, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023, peacefully at home. He was born on November 17, 1938, in Crisp County, GA.
Charles joined the Army in 1955 at only 17 years of age. After quickly learning to fly, he was piloting Huey UH-1 Medivac Helicopters. During his career with the Army, Charles served in Korea, two tours in Vietnam, three tours in Europe and saved the lives of countless American soldiers. After 20 years of faithful service to his country, he retired from the Army in 1976.
Charles was blessed with a loving family. He is survived by the love of his life of 65 years, his wife Patricia Ann (Herring); sister Sandra Pope (JC); daughter Ronda (James); grandchildren, Jason (Cleida), Mandy, and Emily (Trae); and great-grandchildren, Sophie, Nolan, Stevie Jae, Cooper, and Shea who knew and loved him as Granddaddy too. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Jr.; parents EC and Evelyn Lucille Stewart; and sister, Janice (John).
Charles was a kind and honest man with a great sense of humor. He loved spending time with his family and serving his country. As a man of faith, Charles loved God and sought to serve and honor Him. He was a member and Deacon of New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Pitts, Georgia. He was also a man that knew how to fix just about anything. Among those, automobiles were his favorite. Charles spent countless hours fixing up old cars in his garage. He was also an avid fisherman and golfer.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 26, from 11:00am-12:00 pm at Frazier and Son Funeral Home in Rochelle, GA. A Celebration of Charles’ life will follow. Graveside service will be held at New Bethel Cemetery with Military Honors. .
