Carl Webb Gillespie, age 88, of Abbeville, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021, in the Tift Regional Hospital.He was a member and deacon of the Abbeville First Baptist Church, where he also sang in the choir, and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was an Emergency Medical Technician with the Wilcox County E.M.S. He was a former mayor of Abbeville and a member of the city council, and Fire Chief. He was also a member of the Abbeville Lions Club where he received his 65-year membership pin in 2020, and the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2016.He served 2 terms as president and chairman of the Chicken-Que and White Cane Day for many years.He was devoted to charity and projects that benefited less fortunate children.He loved going on mission trips with the Baptist Builders to Mexico and Central American countries.Carl served his country as an airplane mechanic with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Carl was born May 2, 1932, in Houston County to the late Carl W. Sr. and Lucy Talton Gillespie.He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline J. Gillespie in 2015.Survivors include his daughters, Lucy Keene of Front Royal, VA, and Carla Brooks (Ward) of Abbeville; his grandchildren, Carson Brooks (Sara), Joseph Brooks, Kelly Werner (Nick), Joel Keene, and Emily Thomas (Tony), and seven great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, February 13th, at 11:00 a.m. in Stubbs Cemetery with Mickey Craven officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to any children’s charity in memory of Mr. Carl. Frazier & Son Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of the arrangements.
